Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) have revolutionised hydrological surveying by providing a safe, efficient, and cost-effective alternative to traditional, manned boat-based methods.

These watercraft operate autonomously or via control carrying advanced sensors to map water bodies, 3D model underwater terrain and analyse water quality particularly in shallow, hazardous or hard-to-reach areas.

Rise primarily provides sonar (single beam or multi beam) bathymetric surveys to collect high-resolution data on water depth, submerged terrain and seafloor characteristics. However, we also use a range of USV’s, ROVs, LiDAR scanners and a 5.3m Rib to provide custom and hybrid data capture solutions to inform a variety of hydrological modelling needs.

Waste stabilisation ponds (WSP) are the most widely used water water treatment infrastructure worldwide and are used extensively in Australia, including the whole of the Northern Territory which is served by 70 WSPs.

The most challenging issue for WSP management is sludge accumulation which affects the ponds hydrodynamic performance and treatment effectiveness. Bathymetric surveys (measuring the depth of a body of water and mapping the underwater terrain) are used to measure sludge accumulation. Traditional methods (using a stick on a boat) are inaccurate, unreliable, unsafe and labour intensive.

Rise were one of the first businesses to bring digital bathymetric USV technology to survey remote NT WSPs, and have been leading innovation in this area for the past five years.

In the NT WSPs have unique water conditions: high levels of non-organic debris from having no Inlet Works and high levels of organic matter from the hotter climate.

The majority of USV solutions on the market have been designed to operate in temperate climates and use outboard or impellers; which are unable to ‘chop’ denser tropical organic material, get clogged by larger debris and too large to be transported on light aircraft into remote communities.

Rise have custom designed, built and successfully tested a simple, lightweight USV “Steamer” specifically to work in tropical, high debris, contaminated water bodies.

Rise's "Steamer" USV has potential applications for defence, utilities, agriculture and aquaculture across the global Tropics.
Key features include:

- Lightweight (7kg) only needs 1 person to carry and launch.

Remote flood damage assessments

Pi geon Hole, Daguragu, Kalkarindji flood damage assessements

In Marc h 2023, the remote Northern Territory communities of Pigeon Hole, Daguragu and Kalkarindji were severely flooded forcing the evacuation of residents to Darwin and major damage to property, infrastructure and the local school.

As remote community project delivery experts with the ability to mobilise quickly and effectively to remote locations (even during the wet season) Sedgewick loss adjusters engaged Rise to capture digital twins and aerial footage of the damaged assets across the three communities.

With the access road flooded and the airstrip too wet for any aircraft to land, Rise flew in and out of the three communities by helicopter.

Over two days Rise captured digital twins of residential, dwellings, community centres, council offices, medical centres, school and workshops across 20 sites.

The digital twins were provided to Sedgewick as a shareable unique web link to an individual asset portal within a week. The portal contained:

- Photo-realistic digital twin with measurement tool and virtual tour.

- Aerial footage.

- Downloadable Floor Plan.

- Location maps.

The digital twins streamlines the claims process by providing a centralised source of truth that could be shared with insurers, loss adjustors, asset managers and contractors.

Rise delivered the first-ever digital twin of a PWC tank and have worked with PWC over the past 5 years to help PWC adopt and implement digital twinning software into their internal IT systems.

The high-resolution digital twins allow PWC to undertake virtual visual inspections and tours (including measurements) of water tank – both internally and externally.

The digital twins are used for:

- Condition reporting.

- Scoping and measurement.

- Visual inspections.

- Pre-site inductions.

- Capital works scoping.

Infrastructure Corridor Mapping

Orthmosaic mapping of North and South corridor

Rise were one of the first businesses to innovate orthomosaic mapping capability here in the Northern Territory.

Rise was providing drone footage of the Strauss Treatment Plant construction and saw the opportunity for PWC to use aerial mapping to accurately model both the North and South pipelines from Strauss.

Rise used aerial drones to map both corridors by autonomously capturing high-resolution, georeferenced data along the corridors.

This data was then processed to create precise 3D models, digital elevation models and orthomosaic maps which are used for inspection, maintenance and planning.

Corridor mapping is used to measure vegetation clearance; calculated cut-and-fill volumes; monitoring construction.

Aerial mapping eliminates the need for personnel to walk along dangerous, remote or high-traffic infrastructure corridors, while providing highly accurate, actional data that can be used for ongoing monitoring, and is far quicker than traditional land-based surveying.

Development of new bathymetric USV for tropical waste water

We are so proud to have our investment into the development of a tropical bathymetric USV (unmanned service vehicle) secure matched funding from Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre Ltd .

Current wastewater survey methods are often not fit-for-purpose for the waste water conditions in tropical Northern Australia - high debris loads and organic matter.

Rise provides remote-access, high-resolution (4k) timelapse footage of 2 PWC construction sites.

Rise PC uses a DSLR camera housed in a custom-built tropical, weatherproof housing that provides high quality images. The camera is set-up with a 20W solar panel so a fixed power supply is not needed.

Rise PC manage all installation and maintenance logistics, including traffic management and boom lift operations.

The cameras provide PWC has 24/7 access to the still and video footage of each site in real-time with one simple login to an online platform and the ability to easily create a time-lapse video at any time.

Water tank leak detection

Rise invested in ROV (remote operated veh icle) underwater drones back in 2022 and were one of the first businesses to bring leak detection technology to PWC water tank inspections.

The ROV uses food-safe dye to detect leaks in water tanks by injecting coloured liquid directly onto suspected damaged areas - such as cracks, rivets or seam - and watches to see if the dye is sucked out of the tank, and/or looking for the dye to leak outside the tank.

The technique allows for precise, non-destructive, and in-service inspections without he need to empty the tank.

The high-contrast colour of the dye makes it easy to trac the flow of water, providing immediate visual confirmation of the leak location.

Rise ROV have also been used to provide visual inspections of full PWC tanks. Rise are able to provide a live feed while the ROV is in the tank so in-site PWC personnel can direct the ROV footage capture and inspection.

Rise's ROV services have been used by PWC for:

Waste water pond mapping

Rise has innovated PWC's waste stabilisation pond (WSP) sludge management

Over the past 4 years Rise has partnered with PWC to innovate PWC’s WSP surveys and sludge management practices and technology.

Initially Rise invested in an Australian made bathymetric USV (unmanned surface vehicle) to do the first-ever digital bathymetric surveys of PWC’s WSP’s, providing PWC with accurate sludge and WSP 3D modelling.

However, the unique conditions of the majority of NT WSP’s (no inlet works, high organic and inorganic debris) meant the off-the shelf USV struggled.

Rise then co-funded an AMCG grant to develop the world first “Steamer” paddle driven USV which has been successfully tested in PWC WSP’s.

Rise’s comprehensive WSP services using both USV and aerial drones provides:

- Digital bathymetric survey of full lagoons to assess sediment depth and volume – to inform capital works; sludge management; compliance with Discharge Licence.

- Aerial imagery to monitor lagoon emptying process and progress.

- 3D modelling of empty lagoon to accurately measure the volume of the lagoon.

Rise undertook extensive research and testing to find a bathymetric USVs (unmanned service vehicle) that would be able to withstand the climatic extreme’s of the Territory and provide PWC with the most effective, efficient and accurate datasets.

The success of Rise’s development is they now provide full waste water lagoon services, across the Territory, that include bathymetric sediment assessments, aerial monitoring of lagoon emptying and orthomosaic mapping of the empty lagoons for volume measurement.

For insurance professionals Rise's Digital Twin's offer a faster, more reliable way to document damage, collaborate across teams, and move claims forward without repeat visits or costly delays.

In a single visit, Rise captures a Digital Twin of the interior of the damaged property. This is provided as a simple web - no external software or download is needed.

The web portal provides a digital twin allowing for a virtual tour of the damaged property; in-model measurement tools; whole of site navigation; downloadable floor plan; gallery or aerial photos; location map and .csv of room quantity take offs.

Darwin River Dam was opened in 1972 and is the major water source for the city of Darwin.

The Dam is an embankment type dam estimated to hold up to 259,000 megalitres of water - half the volume of Sydney Harbour, and 11 times bigger than Manton Dam.

Rise undertook a bathymetric survey of the entire reservoir to model the reservoir bed providing PWC with accurate reservoir volumetrics to model the impact of changing water levels.

Rise also provided industry leading visualisation of the Inlet Tower (digital twin and underwater ROV inspection); Dam embankment (orthomosaic mapping) to allow PWC to undertake comprehensive inspections.

During the survey works Rise was also able to identify and map various submerged hazards within the reservoir (telegraph poles, old railway tracks).

Somerville Community Ser vices is a for-purpose organisation providing supported accommodation for people with disabilities and high support needs.

They currently manage houses in Darwin and Katherine and are in the process of building new houses in Alice Springs.

Rise was engaged to visualise both the constructed houses and future houses to enable clients, carers, support staff, leadership and stakeholders to virtually visit, inspect and manage the houses.

Rise provided a variety of services:

Pre constructed houses

Rise created photo realistic digital twins of the futures houses from the Floor Plans and Finish Schedules (see main picture).

The digital twin provided Somerville with a fully immersible 3D model for staff, clients and stakeholders to virtually walk-through from anywhere in the world.

Constructed houses

Rise undertook LiDAR scans of all the houses to generate high-resolution digital twins, including in-model measurement tools, virtual tours, floor plans and room quantity take offs.

Rise also 3D printed all the houses as a vital engagement and planning tool.

Darwin Harbour bathymetric survey

Cross sections of 20 Darwin Harbour channels

Rise was engaged to survey 20 Darwin Harbour channels to provide NTG with full cross-sectional profiles of each channel.

A key consideration for this project was the unique Darwin Harbour environment:

- Macro-tidal system with extreme tidal range (up to 8m from high to low tide).

- Fast currents and mangrove-lined creek banks.

To mitigate these issues Rise surveyed using both a bathymetric USV and 5.3m Rib. Rise developed a hybrid approach combining high solutions with multi-beam sonar and land-based mobile LiDAR, removing need to apply for CASA and RAAF approvals for aerial UAV works.

The final output was 20 georeferenced channel profiles, delivered within 3 weeks from final approval, including:

- LAS point clouds

- DXF, SHP and KMZ formats.

- Water level vs cross sections area tables.

- Summary reports.

The most significant part for us was the opportunity to pitch Rise's innovative work to a panel of national and international business leaders, to tell them the story of the Territory and broader Northern Australia - a story so unimagined across most of Australia.

Steve and I started Rise in our mouldy downstairs room, cockroaches clicking in the skirting boards and wet season rains seeping up through the floor.

Our version of success was simple - keep the wolves from the door, the kids from each other’s throats and our marriage off the rocks. Our work was inspired by a simple desire to find better solutions to the challenges of working across remote Northern Australia and fueled by the Goat family competitiveness that can’t bear to see anyone get there first!

We brainstormed the business name, via text, while I was in Royal Darwin Hospital Emergency Department with a ruptured appendix, double-bunked, high-as-a-kite on morphine. This was also the day after Steve had been diagnosed with a DVT and a couple of weeks after our daughter had fractured her elbow while Cyclone Marcus hit town. This meant when we started our business the only fully functional beings in our house were a 7 year old boy….and a dog.

So if you’re wanting to know a good time to start a business – there isn’t one… just start!

We had no plan, no strategy, no vision board – just a belief our idea mattered. In the beginning we didn’t measure our success we were simply trying to survive – as a business, as a family and as a married couple.

We had no time to stop and get perspective, we were simply

- too busy testing and adapting equipment to work in the heat and humidity.

- too busy building better transport cases to protect our kit as it rattled 1,000ks across the red dust corrugations.

- too busy navigating every corner of this vast and epic landscape.

- too busy researching equipment we could take on small planes so we could access communities when the roads were flooded.

- too busy trying to manage software and huge data sets with no internet connection.

- too busy changing tyres and fixing broken vehicles.

I could say it was a ‘juggle’ but that gives the impression it was somehow co-ordinated and skilled it wasn’t – some days it was a complete and utter shouty, shit show.

A defining moment was when Steve came back from yet another few weeks working remote, driving endless k’s in the heat on the dusty corrugations. I was at home working a part-time job, while also trying to build my own consultancy, while also having to manage the lives of two very sporty, active kid’s; and like so many of us – trying to do all this with no family on hand to help out.

He was welcomed home by surly kids, a sulky wife, and a sloppy cold supper. Steve surveyed this sad, miserable scene and said.

“why are we doing this if we can’t even enjoy it?”

We realised we needed to have some honest conversations about what we wanted from Rise – as a family, as people and as a couple. We didn’t want Rise to destroy the very thing it was created for – our family. We recognised we’d fallen into the trap of not questioning the idea we’d been sold about what a business ‘should’ be. We never questioned if we agreed with the typical business model that needed us to aggressively chase profit and growth at all costs. We didn’t …..and still don’t.

So we decided to define our own version of success based around balance, not growth, and sought purpose not only profit. We started to structure Rise to foster not only financial wealth. but time wealth, physical wealth, mental wealth, social wealth and family wealth.

It was this year Steve took his first kite trip – which is now a sacred event in the Rise and family calendar. The only thing that’s changed over the years is our son now joins him….and completely smashes him! On weekend’s you’re more likely to see us in the ocean, not the office, We prioritise family trips over business trips….and we don’t apologise for this.

We want to foster creativity and curiosity; to create a place where people can flourish; and I believe our success can be demonstrated by our loyal staff, engaged clients and our three innovation awards…and the fact our teenage kids still want to hang out with us!

A few years in we were winning bigger contracts and starting to feel pride in Rise’s work. We became more confident as business leaders – more strategic and intentional. We were beginning to see Rise’s value, but something still felt off with how we were telling the Rise story. We were using the same technology, delivering large-scale projects, and delivering the same services as many bigger technology businesses, but Rise’s story had an air of apology about the complexities and challenges of operating here in Northern Australia – they felt like failures and faults. Our story felt tepid and timid, Rise was “less than”; we weren’t as big and shiny as the everyone else.

Then I had to write our first NT Government tender. An epic effort requiring more self-reflection than a therapy session and feeling like a business colonoscopy – getting right into the guts and showing me things, I really didn’t think I needed to see. Line by line I started to see every challenge overcome, every piece of technology adapted, every km spent on the red dust, every storm weathered, every vehicle fixed was our value, and our story.

I’d been trying to fit Rise into the narrative of a temperate, corporate, metro-centric business, when in fact we were a rugged, tropical, remote Northern Australian business. We weren’t as big because we had to be agile and adaptable. We weren’t as shiny and corporate because you can’t be on the red dust corrugations. We were more Hilux than Mercedes, we didn’t fit into the temperate, southern business narrative for the simple fact we belonged here – in the epic north.

We reimagined and rewrote the Rise story in the context of the place where it was formed – along the coastline of Tiwi’s, in the central desert heat,

drenched in raging rains and clouded in red dust plumes. Our story, our value isn’t what we do, but the fact we do it in one of the most extreme and isolated places - not only in Australia - but on Earth.

What Rise overcomes on a daily basis isn’t something to apologise for, it is something to celebrate and leverage, particularly against interstate businesses, because Rise’s ability to work in the most remote and isolated parts of Australia can’t be learnt on the streets of Melbourne. Our experience of delivering large-scale projects across this epic landscape, in the wilds of the wet season, weren’t crafted in Canberra.

We are not a second-rate southern business – we are a first rate, tropical, remote Northern Australian business. And this isn’t just Rise’s story – it’s the story of Territory businesses. A story so fundamentally shaped by the epic landscapes, extreme climates and brutal isolation of Northern Australia.

It’s the story of our unsealed roads –75% of the roads across half of Australia’s landmass are unsealed, red dust corrugations.

It’s the story of Australia thinking the Territory has no population outside of Darwin, Alice or Katherine – when there are in fact over 70 remote communities right across the Territory.

It’s the story of delivering vital services to these remote communities cut off for months during the wet season because the single, unsealed corrugated access road is flooded.

It’s the story of vast swathes of Northern Australia – again, that is NOT empty - having no mobile coverage in a ‘digital’ world.

It’s the story of using equipment and technology manufactured for temperate climates lasts half as long as it should, is double the price, and has to be sent 1,000ks for a repair.

And yet, we not only survive, but thrive and innovate in a place so hard to imagine in the aircon of Darwin, and virtually unimagined in the boardrooms of Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra.

So this story needs to be told…..And more importantly it needs to be heard because this story matters not only to us, but to the Territory and Australia – this story is one of the North’s most vital and valuable assets.

This story matters because our ordinary…. is their extraordinary.

Resurrecting "Gary" the Million Dollar Fish

Client: NT Major Events | Museum and Art Gallery of the NT

Back in May 2024 the Million Dollar Fish, caught by Keegan Payne, was donated to the MAGNT for them to preserve this life-changing barramundi.

Rise and MAGNT saw the unique opportunity to create a digital twin of the barramundi, in its natural form, before it was preserved in formaldehyde and placed in a specimen jar.

The barra had been frozen but for Rise to create the most natural looking digital twin the barra had to be photographed unfrozen. Rise worked with Michael Hammer, Curator of Fishes at MAGNT to plan the data capture during the small window between defrosting and the barra being preserved in formaldehyde.

The digital twin was then created and animated to bring the fish back to life – including through Augmented Reality (AR) for the launch of the new Million Dollar Fish.

The digital twin has immortalised this iconic fish and has given NTMEC and MAGNT a unique and powerful asset to promote and engaged people in a way simply not possible with the physical specimen.

QR code to virtually catch "Gary" the $1m barra

We brought the $1million barra back to life!

Back in May, we worked with the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT (MAGNT) to capture imagery of "Gary" the iconic Million Dollar Barra while he was still in his natural state; before he was preserved in formaldehyde.

We then created this incredible digital twin - which shows the prize winning red tag - and then animated the twin and created an Augmented Reality (AR) version so that Gary can work hard to promote the new Season 10 of the Million Dollar Fish. The AR version allows audiences to create their own hilarious content with Gary!

Today, Rise was announced at the NT winner of the "Embracing Innovation" category for the Telstra Best of Business Awards.

Rise was founded in 2018 when Steve was working on a roof in a remote community, sweating in the brutal humidity of the tropical ‘build-up’ and thought “we can do this better”. He brought an aerial drone with the simple idea of doing safer, quicker roof inspections.

6 years later, driven by Steve’s vision, Rise is now a leading Territory business using aerial drones, bathymetric drones, underwater drones, LiDAR scanners and high-grade cameras to create digital twins and virtual tours to help clients virtually inspect or visit a remote site, artefact, building, asset or landscape from anywhere in the world.

We are particularly proud that the judges commended our passion for the Territory and said our commitment to using technology to strengthen the remote North shone through in our submissions. Rise is a proud Territory business working right across remote Northern Australia and we are passionate about inspiring Territory businesses to reimagine themselves not as second-rate southern companies, but as first rate tropical, remote Northern Australian experts.

We see this Award as an opportunity to showcase not only Rise, but the innovative work that is happening here in the Territory and broader Northern Australia. Reality check - digital twins for protecting and inspecting

What is a digital twin?

A digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical object. Here at Rise we create digital twins (3D models) of objects as intricate as artworks and as large as landscapes.

How we create digital twins

To create digital twins we capture images (often in their 1,000s) from various angles around the object or site and then process these images using photogrammetry techniques to create the digital twins.

Photogrammetry is the process of identifying common points across the images to calculate their exact position in 3D space, which is then generated into a 3D mesh. Texture data from the original images is then mapped onto the mesh to create a highly realistic 3D model of the real-world object.

It's all in the detail

The quality of a digital twin is dependent on the quality of the equipment, images and photogrammetry expertise used to create it.

- The higher the quality of the camera and studio equipment - the higher quality the images.

- The more experienced the person capturing the images - the higher the quality of the data set.

- The higher the skill level of the photogrammetry expertise processing the data set - the higher level of accuracy and detail of the digital twin.

To achieve the most accurate replication with the highest level of detail we use professional grade cameras, aerial UAV drones and LiDAR scanners. This equipment is able to capture the highest resolution imagery and our in-house photogrammetry experts then process these data sets into the most accurate replicas - which is why our twins are used for museum artworks and inspecting infrastructure.

Below is a comparison of two twins - one we created using iPhone camera images and one created using Rise studio equipment - which clearly demonstrates how the quality of equipment significantly impacts that accuracy and detail of a digital twin.

Northern Territory company Rise Project Consulting has a practical, realistic approach to its innovative work – using the right technology for the job.

In other words, technology that works down south won’t necessarily work in the far north. " A Mercedes is nice to look at, but I’d rather be in a Toyota on the red dust of the Territory’s roads ,” says co-owner Anna Goat. The philosophy has brought the company great success.

Rise is a family-owned business specialising in providing large-scale asset inspection and visualisation services using 3D scanning, 3D photogrammetry, AR, VR, drones, bathymetric USV’s and underwater ROVs. They use industry leading technology to let clients see or inspect a site, artefact, building or landscape when they can't be there.

“We are remote Northern Australian specialists with a deep understanding of the unique challenges of working in remote Australia,” says Anna.

“We are able to successfully deliver projects in the most extreme climates and in the remotest areas of Northern Australia, having worked in over 80 remote communities.” The award-winning company works with a range of clients, including government, land councils, tourism, construction, insurance, heritage and utilities. They have the ability to run large-scale inspection and visualisation projects concurrently.

Anna and her carpenter husband Steve moved to Darwin from Perth for three months – 15 years ago. “We love bringing up our family in Darwin ,” says Anna. “ We love the lifestyle.” Rise was founded six years ago after Steve was carrying out an inspection on a roof in the sweaty November build-up and mumbled to himself: “I can do this so much better.”

So the couple bought their first drone.

The company, which now has a suite of world-class technology, has worked on remote construction sites, mines and Indigenous communities, offering everything from virutal sites inspections and digital twins to checking our oceans for ghost nets.

Their work saves an enormous amount of money, time and effort, especially by sending digital visuals from remote sites to clients often thousands of kilometres away. “ Many people don’t like change at first, but once they’ve seen what we can do – and how much money and time we can save them – they love it,” says Steve. Rise, which won the NT Innovation Industry Award in 2019 and 2021, has even created a digital “twin” of a remote Indigenous rock art site, which was used by SBS in their documentary "First Inventors".

The couple work alongside highly skilled Luke Fronshko, who has a 3D gaming degree. “ Technology is changing very quickly, so we don’t believe in focusing our business on one technology,” says Steve. “ We are driven to solve our clients’ problems and foster a culture of constant curiosity. ”

Steve and Anna met in an unusual way – at Toyko airport on their way to Australia. They had both been contracted to teach water sports in Australia, Steve sub-aqua diving and Anna windsurfing. After completing their contracts, they returned to Britain and applied to emigrate.

They are passionate advocates for the Territory and Territory business.

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin, where we can both say it's stunning and marvellous by design. And as you walk through its corridors you'll come into contact with local, national and international renowned cultural and scientific collections, as well as allowing access to research and exhibition programs. The only downside is that if you don't live in Darwin, you can't walk through and see what is on offer.

Well, that has changed, especially if you wanted to see the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, because if you're not able to physically visit the exhibit, you can go online and walk through digitally in their virtual gallery. So today, as we marvel in today's wondrous technology, let's learn how photogrammetry brought the NATSIAAs to your screen. Luke Fronsko is the Project Manager and Steve Goat is the owner and Managing Director from Rise, which is the company that made the NATSIAA’s virtual tour possible. Good afternoon.

Hi, Thanks for having us!

First off, if you haven't been online, you should go to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Go to the NATSIAA and there's a virtual gallery. I went through this today and it is just wonderful that I've been in both in person and online, and it's exactly the same. Congratulations to you both. I just want to say that what a wonderful job. So, let's describe to people what photogrammetry is first.

Photogrammetry is the process of grabbing a whole heap of really high-quality images and turning those images into 3D models, which can then be viewed online. And in the case of the NATSIAA virtual gallery, there's a number of artists 3D artworks that have been turned into digital twins - really high-quality 3D models - that people online can virtually pick up and view in really, really close detail.

In terms of scale, how close can you get into an image or artefact?

For the 3D models that we've created, you can get in closer than you would be able to see if you visited them in person. Especially the fragile artworks and ones behind Perspex. The digital twins and virtual gallery allow people online to get right up close, like your nose is right in front of the object.

Is Photogrammetry a new technology?

Photogrammetry has been around for a number of years. It is just trickling into places like museums and where it’s used to allow people to virtually view artworks in really, really high, high detail.

So, Steve, you're the owner and Managing Director from Rise Project Consulting – the local business who delivered this whole project. Tell me about Rise’s work with digital twins and 3D models.

Rise started by making digital twins of buildings and remote communities, and even water tanks and things like that. And then we developed the process from basic building 3D models to going into higher end, high-quality models, and are now working with the arts and indigenous rock art sites.

So, if you have a water tower, can you just explain for people who might not be able to picture in their head what you're actually doing with the water tower?

As a business, I started Rise because I wanted to take the risk out of visualising large assets – like water towers - and working at height. So we basically created a digital twin of that actual tower, which is a highly detailed digital replica of the water tower which can be inspected from the safety of your desk.

So how did the museum and art gallery and you come together to work together?

Interesting question. We'd been doing a virtual tour for different clients, and then Covid happened. Previously the MAGNT online gallery was being done by interstate companies, but the museum has to see if it could be done here in Darwin because of COVID restrictions. They found Rise and realised we offered the same capabilities, if not better, right here in Darwin. So we were given the given the job as trial in 2022 and they were so pleased we were asked to do it again in 2023.

Let's talk about the NATSIAA virtual gallery because this is where people at home can navigate themselves through the entire exhibit from start to finish from home, as if you were walking through in person. Everything you see on the walls, all the little wording beside each little project is there as well. It seems like a very complex and long job.

Yes, definitely. Overall, it was a pretty large piece of work, which took several of months, especially on the photogrammetry side. I was in and out of the museum over a number of months and weeks scanning these models, working with the museum to get access to them.

We did nine digital twins of the 3D art in total, but they are made up of 41 individual objects. So that is roughly, I think, tallied up to we took over 20,000 photos for all of the objects and crunched all of that processing data to provide these 3D models. And in terms of walking through the space, there's over 100 individual 360-degree image points, so you can stand in front of every single piece of artwork like you were standing in the physical exhibition space.

And but you can get up so much closer you can. Well, how did it feel being so close to such amazing pieces of work? And on the other side of that, although maybe excited, quite big, might be quite nerve racking.

Yeah. Yeah, definitely.

Throughout the process, especially when we're working with objects that are made out of terracotta or fragile objects. We go through a whole process with the museum to get inducted into handling, and that's a very big part. If we don't need to move an object, then we don’t and we work with them to handle and access these objects.

Tell me about the process of actually photographing the pieces; the two vases - how do you photograph them so that it all comes together virtually?

We have all have the objects set up on something like a turntable. We have a professional lighting setup with some really high megapixel cameras. We probably took about 600 photos per pot and the pots are spinning around on the turntable and we're capturing very close, very high detailed images which then get turned into the 3D model.

Every object required a slightly different approach. Some of the smaller ones we can put on a turn table and I can just press the camera shutter every time it will take a photo. The larger objects I need to physically walk around the object to capture the photos. I’m trying to capture every single part of the object.

You also visualise parts of the model which others can't see once it's on display in the actual gallery, like for the bottoms of the pots, for example. Online you can actually pick it up, turn it around virtually and actually see everything. You can see the artists signatures and things like that that are in there.

These must be some pretty high standard cameras that you're using. It's like everything like you need the right tools for the trade so we use use the high end, high spec cameras and lighting. That's a massive part of it as well.

We are so lucky doing all of the scanning for NATSIAA. We are able to get up very close to these very intricate carvings – we feel like we know these pieces very well and we're just excited to be able to share the gallery as a whole to everyone all over the world.

"Crucial battle for Coastal Conservation"

In a significant stride towards preserving the pristine beauty of the Tiwi Islands, the Tiwi Land Council recently embarked on a groundbreaking mission - a Ghost net mapping survey. This ambitious initiative aimed to identify and document the pervasive issue of ghost nets along the coastlines of the two islands.

Working in tandem with local Tiwi Rangers, whose invaluable knowledge of the land and coastline proved instrumental to the project and the Tiwi Enterprises, who recently purchase Sea Darwin / Sea Tiwi, were engaged to provide and crew the vessel Olive Ridley, a 12m solid hull rib with 2 x 452hp Yahama outboards. This vessel is fast, has a shallow draw and has steps for beach landings. Tiwi Land Council staff provided ground support.

The Tiwi Lands Council collaborated with Rise Project Consulting (Rise), a Darwin based consultancy firm specialising in environmental projects. Rise deployed a dedicated team of three experts, armed with state-of-the-art technology including airborne drones, Digital Single-Lens Reflect (DLSR) cameras, and a submersible Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). This arsenal of tool enabled the team to capture visual data both above and below the water's surface, providing a comprehensive overview of the extent of the ghost net issue. This approach not only highlighted the severity of the issue but also uncovered previously undiscovered nets and associated debris, underscoring the urgency of addressing this environmental threat.

Armed with this comprehensive dataset, the Tiwi Land Council plans to work with the Tiwi Islands Rangers to develop informed strategies for the removal and disposal of ghost nets. The visual documentation provides a roadmap for targeted interventions, allowing the rangers to prioritise areas most affected by this environmental menace. Additionally, the data serves as a foundation for ongoing monitoring efforts, enabling the rangers to track changes in the prevalence of ghost nets over time and assess the effectiveness of conservation initiatives.

Manton Dam Survey

Client: Power and Water Corporation (PWC)

Rise was commissioned by PWC to do a bathymetric survey of the entire reservoir to model the reservoir bed to enable PWC to assess how surface water level changes will impact recreation activities when the Dam is returned to service.

Rise also used UAV drones to survey the reservoir banks to create a comprehensive Digital Terrain model of the entire Dam, including the boat ramp.

Rise also used underwater sonar and terrestrial lidar to create a 3D model of the Dam wall and intake tower that will be used to model future infrastructure upgrades and improvements.

The survey works were carried out during the tropical wet season and supported by Rise’s 5.4m rib.

Ghost net mapping

Client: Tiwi Land Council

The Rise team collaborated with the Tiwi Land Council, local Tiwi Rangers and Sea Darwin on this groundbreaking project.

Rise used UAV aerial drones, DSLR cameras and a submersible ROV to capture visual data both above and below the water along the entire Tiwi Island’s coastline. The surveys were conducted over three long days in the field.

The survey highlighted the severity of the ghost net issue and identified previously undiscovered nets and marine debris. Tiwi Land Council will use the comprehensive dataset to work with the Tiwi Island Rangers to develop informed strategies for the removal and disposal of ghost nets.

The visual documentation will be used to prioritise interventions, and for ongoing monitoring to track changes in the prevalence of ghost nets, and the effectiveness of conservation initiatives.

Jabiru water tower inspection

The 34 metre high water tower is located in Jabiru, the main township in Kakadu National Park, approximately 250kms from Darwin. The risks and costs of inspecting such a large piece of infrastructure – both externally and internally are high - so Rise was contracted to create a digital twin of the water tank, and to use an underwater ROV drone to inspect the internal tank condition.

Rise used data from a UAV aerial drone and terrestrial scanner to create a photogrammetry, digital twin of the water tank. As photogrammetry specialist, Rise create a high quality, precise digital twin which allowed the client to undertake a highly detailed, accurate inspection.

The underwater ROV drone captured video footage and imagery of the internal condition of the tank, which enabled the client to internally inspect the tank without the risk of using scuba divers, or cost and waste of having to empty the tank

NATSIAA online gallery and digital twins

Rise is proud to sponsor the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards. Our sponsorship includes creating digital twins of the 3D artworks and an online gallery of the awards exhibition.

We used the highest quality photogrammetry techniques to create individual digital twins of each 3D artwork which allows people to virtually explore the art in a way that simply isn’t possible in the real world. These models are then embedded in the online gallery to provide an immersive experience for a global audience.

Rise also worked with the MAGNT education team to develop an offline version of the gallery as a teaching resource that is now used in over 100 schools. We also provided talks and children’s workshops to educate and inspire people about the potential for photogrammetry in the Territory.

Rock Art digital twin

Rise specialises in creating high quality, heritage-grade digital twins using DSLR cameras, UAV aerial drones and the most advanced photogrammetry techniques.

Ronde Media, a Sydney-based production company collaborated with local film producer Moogie Down Productions on the SBS documentary “First Inventors’. They needed to capture footage of a large remote rock art site located 180kms outside of Katherine, but the cost and time of mobilising a film crew to site was prohibitive.

Rise was engaged to create a full digital twin of the entire 50m x 30m x 20m rock art site that could be edited into the final documentary. The digital twin is of such a high quality that it was used to replicate wide screen camera angles as well as close-up shots of the intricate rock art paintings.

East Arm heritage survey

Client: Onsite Cultural Heritage | Land Development Corporation

The Northern Territory Government is building a Ship Lift at East Arm in Darwin Harbour. Adjacent to the Ship Lift is the site of the World War II Lugger Maintenance Section (LMS) - the operational base for the famous Z Special Unit, the precursor of the Australian commando forces.

The base operated from 1942 – 1945 and at its peak accommodated 500 personnel. Only a third of the original camp area remains on the site with evidence of approximately 18 features including the lugger slipway and concrete structures for workshops, latrines, mess complex, washhouse, battery charging rooms and an engine room.

Rise was contracted by Onsite Cultural Heritage to produce heritage-grade digital twins of the Engine Room, Workshops and Latrine, and orthomosaic mapping of the entire site to inform and support their Cultural Heritage Management Plan.

Large-scale condition assessments

Client: Northern Territory Government (NTG)

Rise was awarded a 3 year contract with DIPL (Department of Infrastructure Planning and Logistics) to undertake asset inspections across the Territory ranging from CBD buildings to the remotest homelands.

Over the 3 years Rise has inspected over 33,000 assets across 332 sites including police stations, school, hospitals, health clinics, detention centres, research farms, pumphouses, shelters and boat ramps. The scope of the works was to inspect NTG owned assets against DIPL’s current asset register, floor plans and condition scoring. Rise was responsible for managing all clearances, programming, logistics and access.

Rise was provided with asset data in Excel spreadsheets, floor plans and drawings. Rise developed data sorting processes and a custom digital data collection platform that enabled quick on-site inspections data to be captured effectively on an iPad.

Rise worked continuously with DIPL to refine data collection processes to provide the most accurate datasets to inform Forward Works Planning across the NT.

ALC Virtual Asset Tours

Client: Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC)

Anindilyakwa Land Councils manages a large range of assets on Groote Eylandt - an island 650kms from Darwin. These include cultural centres, music studios, ranger houses, warehouses and men’s sheds. These assets need to be inspected, scoped and assessed by insurance agencies, architects and contractors; which due to Groote Eylandt’s isolation is expensive and time consuming.

Rise was engaged by ALC to create virtual tours and capture data sets of all these assets to reduce the need for external contracts to travel to site. Rise used lidar scanners, UAV drones and DLSR cameras to create virtual tours, to generate floor plans and capture point cloud data of all 53 assets to allow third parties to virtually assess and inspect the assets.

Where Rise was unable to scan an asset, Rise’s construction expertise meant we were able to manually generate floors plans using traditional methods.

The outcome of the project was the creation of a comprehensive asset data set that can be used for future scoping, assessment and inspection works.

ALPA Virtual Gallery

Client: Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA)

In 2022 the Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA) developed a Yolnu community-led photography exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT (MAGNT), in Darwin to celebrate it’s 50th anniversary.

The exhibition Gumurr’manydji Manapanmirr Djama (Making successful business together) , curated by Yolnu communities included historical vignettes of life in Milingimbi, Galiwin’ku, Gapuwiyak, Ramingining and Minjilang – remote communities, hundreds of kms from Darwin.

Rise was engaged to develop an immersive virtual tour of the exhibition to allow these communities to see the exhibition, and for the school children to be able to learn their ancestral stories.

“This gallery is a good thing for our kids. It means they can learn from our ancestors about the way we used to do things and where we have come from. It’s important for them to know their story through the photos and to be able to pass down these stories…about their ancestors doing fishing business and working on farms.” ALPA Ramingining Director.

Artificial Reef Casting

Client: Shorecast NT

Rise was contracted by Shorecast NT to capture time-lapse footage of the fabrication and casting of 110 concrete artificial reef pylons.

A key requirement of the project was to provide the client with 24/7 access to the footage, which was achieved using remote-access cameras; these enabled the client to generate a quick video in real-time, at any stage of the project.

The large-scale nature of the project meant that the camera’s needed to be moved regularly to ensure the full project was captured effectively, and Rise was able to remoted amend the time-lapse rate as the project progressed.

On completion of the casting, Rise engaged a local videographer to capture promotional footage that created a historical record of the reef before it was sunk into the ocean depths.

Groote Eylandt inspections

Client: HK Solutions | GEMCO (South32)

Rise was contracted by HK Solutions to undertake 319 aerial UAV drone inspections of the GEMCO accommodation on Groote Eylandt – an island approximately 650kms from Darwin.

The inspections included condition assessment rating, aerial roof images and external surface images. All images and assessment data were collected in the clients custom app. on site, and the data quality checked each night.

A key consideration of the project was the need for the aerial drones to be continuously flying up to 10 hours a day for up to 6 consecutive days in the tropical heat, with no servicing facilities available in the location. This required extensive logistical planning to ensure the equipment did not overheat; battery and charging management and heat mitigation strategies for the pilots.

The 319 aerial drone inspections were completed over 2 trips form Darwin, in a total of 10 days with no equipment failure or pilot fatigue.

Remote asset management - Pilot

Rise was instrumental in engaging NTG about the potential for aerial UAV drones and 3D scanning to make remote housing management more efficient, effective and cost-effective. Rise was awarded the Pilot tender to explore this potential in two remote communities (Amoonguna and Nauiyu) in October 2019.

The purpose of the Pilot was to test the limitations, risks and opportunities for using aerial drones and 3D scanning technology for remote asset management. The Pilot was staged so that the data, process and outcomes of the first community could be refined and implemented in the second community.

As part of this Pilot Rise provided research and consultation on the capabilities of each technology; produced explanatory and community engagement videos in language for each community; provided individual Lot reports with aerial datasets; generated individual virtual tours of each property; generated floor plans and created orthomosaic maps of the whole of Amoonguna and Nauiyu.

TIO Stadium inspection

Client: HK Solutions | Northern Territory Government (NTG)

TIO Stadium is the Northern Territory’s premier outdoor stadium. The 12,000 capacity stadium was built in 1991 primarily to cater for Australian Football.

Rise was contracted by HK Solutions to undertake an aerial inspection of the stadium roof and lighting towers; and roof take-offs with a UAV aerial drone. The aerial inspection included identification of debris, drainage problems, incomplete works, missing parts, rust and birds nests in the lighting tower! The roof measurements included perimeter, pitch, surface area, edge types and edge measurements.

A critical consideration for this project was that TIO Stadium is located within 1 nautical mile of Darwin International Airport, one of only two Australian airports managed by the Department of Defence. This required Rise to prepare and lodge CASA approvals to fly within this restricted airspace; to hold a Defence RPAS (Darwin International Airport); to have two licensed operators (RePL and AROC) on site with one in constant radio contact with the Air Traffic Control tower.

Flood Management Monitoring

Client: Northern Territory Government (NTG)

Rise was initially engaged by the Northern Territory Government to capture remote-access footage to monitor the effectiveness of a new flood mitigation site for 6 months.

DSLR camera housing in a custom-built tropical weatherproof housing that provides high quality imagery and time-lapse footage. The camera is set up with a 20W solar panel so a fixed power supply is not needed.

NTG can access still and time-lapse video footage in real-time with one simple login. A key benefit for NT was the ability to quickly and simply produce videos to demonstrate the effectiveness of the works after large storms.

The success of the project led to Rise providing this service for the past 5 years, with the cameras being installed during the wet season each year.

Rise manages all the installation and maintenance logistics, including traffic management and boom lift operations.

Liberty Square Visualisation

Client: Clouston Associates

Prominently located in the centre of Darwin, Liberty Square is a public space adjacent to Parliament House, Supreme Court and Government House commemorating the Darwin Rebellion of 17 December 1918.

The square has many significant features including a 200+ year old Banyan tree and several memorials.

As part of a wider Darwin City Masterplan Clouston Associates (landscape architects) were engaged to develop concept designs for the redevelopment of Liberty Square. Clouston contracted Rise to capture point-cloud of the site and surrounding buildings which they then used to visualise their concepts. Rise produced a ‘fly through’ and the scanning data was also used for dilapidation reports and the accuracy of the data meant it could be used for checking site measurements.

Interstate Site Management

Client: McDonalds Australia

Rise was contracted by McDonalds to provide remote-access cameras that enabled them to remotely monitor renovation works at the Casaurina restaurant during COVID.

Travel restrictions during COVID meant that the South Australian based project team were unable to travel to the Territory to oversee the construction project.

The remote-access camera allowed the client to access still and video footage in real-time online. The project time-frames were tight so the camera enabled the project management team to maintain the program of the project even when interstate travel was uncertain.

Rise also provided a monthly time-lapse progress video for the senior management and media teams. The project provided substantial cost and time savings for McDonalds by reducing the need to travel to site, and demonstrates the value of remote-site monitoring.

When it comes to flying drones in remote locations, thorough preparation is key to a successful and safe mission. Wavell State High School joined Steve Goat from Rise Project Consulting to ask him a few questions about flying remote locations as they are planning a field trip to Nauru in 2024. Here are his expert tips to help you navigate through remote locations with confidence:

Plan flights strategically, no internet needed!

Plan and save your flights in advance, when you have access to internet. This ensures you have all the necessary flights at your fingertips when you're in your chosen location, especially if you're offine.

Secure your data like a pro

Save all imagery on reliable hardware like SD cards, laptops, and hard drives for data storge. Don't rely soley on cloud storage.

Establish respectful relations with locals

Maintain open and honest communication with the local community, especially elders and landowners. This builds trust and helps define boundaries for your drone adventures including flights and transport to your identified location.

Pack extra tech essentials

Bring along extra batteries, tablets, phones, and even an extra drone if possible. It's a wise precaution in case of technical glitches if your budget and baggage allows.

Familiarise yourself with the regulations

Follow the CASA regulations in Australia. If you plan to fly in another country, find out about the civil aviation authority there and make sure you know and follow any local rules that may apply.

Verify permission with drone apps

Use reputable drone safety apps to confirm if you're cleared for takeoff in your chosen spot. If you're unsure, reach out to local aviation authorities for guidance.

Extend courtesies to the Airport personnel

Establish contact with the local airport team. Understanding their schedule will help you determine when and where it's safe to launch your drone.

Weather conditions

Flying in remote locations means you are more susceptible to harsher weather. Have strategies in place to protect you and your equipment from higher or lower than expected temperatures, rain, wind, dust etc.

Repatriated Tiwi Islands artefacts

Client: Tiwi Land Council

In 2022, 250 Tiwi Islands artefacts were gifted back to the Tiwi Islands by John Morris who had bought the items during the 1960s and 70s while working on the islands.

The Tiwi Land Council saw the potential for digital twins to accurately document the artefacts; and to increase engagement and virtual access to the artefacts.

Rise worked with the Tiwi Land Council anthropologist to select artefacts to be digitally twinned;

- Black Cockatoo

- A Male

- A Wooden Stingray

- A Frilled Lizard

- Tunga - Bark Basket

- Crocodile.

Rise captured high resolution imagery of the precious artefacts in their in-house studio, and then used photogrammetry to create highly accurate digital replicas.

The digital John Morris Collection was then displayed on the Tiwi Land Council website home page and have attracted almost 7,000 views.
